Egypt’s Two Great Beach Destinations β Which Is Right for You?
Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh are Egypt’s two most popular Red Sea resorts β and while both offer world-class diving, snorkeling and beach holidays, they have distinct personalities, strengths and appeal. Here’s our honest guide to help you choose.
Location & Getting There
Hurghada sits on the western (Egyptian mainland) side of the Red Sea, about 500 km south of Cairo. It has its own international airport (HRG) with direct flights from Europe, Russia, and the Middle East. It’s also accessible by road from Cairo (about 6 hours) and by fast ferry or flight from Sharm.
Sharm El Sheikh is at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula. Its airport (SSH) receives a very large number of European charter flights, making it one of Egypt’s most visited international gateways. It’s surrounded by the Sinai desert with the mountains as a dramatic backdrop.
Diving & Snorkeling
Both destinations are world-class, but there are differences:
- Hurghada offers great house reef diving directly from hotels on some beaches, excellent day boat diving, and close access to Giftun Island Marine Reserve. The diving is accessible for all levels.
- Sharm El Sheikh has some of the most famous dive sites in the world β Ras Mohammed National Park, Tiran Island, the SS Thistlegorm wreck (considered one of the top 10 wreck dives on Earth), and the Blue Hole in nearby Dahab. For serious divers, Sharm’s waters are arguably the gold standard.
Beaches
- Hurghada beaches are generally calmer, shallower and more family-friendly. The coastline is longer and more developed, with a wide range of resort beaches from budget to luxury.
- Sharm El Sheikh beaches are stunning but many are rocky β entering the water often means walking over coral rock before reaching sand. The beaches at Naama Bay and Shark’s Bay are the most visited.
Nightlife & Town
- Hurghada has a lively town centre and marina area with restaurants, bars and beach clubs. It’s a bigger, more spread-out city with a large expat community and diverse dining options.
- Sharm El Sheikh‘s Naama Bay strip is one of Egypt’s busiest nightlife zones β packed with restaurants, shisha cafes, clubs and international chains. It’s more compact and walkable than Hurghada.
Day Trips & Excursions
- From Hurghada you can do day trips to Luxor, Cairo, the White Desert, and Marsa Alam β giving access to Egypt’s ancient heritage.
- From Sharm El Sheikh you can hike Mount Sinai, visit Saint Catherine’s Monastery, explore Dahab’s Blue Hole, and take day trips to Petra in Jordan.
The Verdict
Choose Hurghada if: you want a beach holiday with easy access to ancient Egypt, more variety in excursions, and a relaxed family atmosphere.
Choose Sharm El Sheikh if: you’re a serious diver, want world-famous dive sites, or prefer lively nightlife in a compact resort environment.
